SPS Programs with Open Enrollment

Any students can register for these programs. These programs are free.

Middle Grades CTE

This program is for all rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Somerville High School CTE is offering career and technical summer programs. Each program offers lots of fun, hands-on lessons and activities in a program of your choice. The programs each run for a week and students can sign up for one week or all three weeks. Programs could include Graphic Communications, Carpentry, Culinary, and Health Careers.

Middle Grades Robotics

Explore engineering, digital design, fabrication, coding, and robotics with high school students from the SHS Robotics Team. Learn how to use 3D printers, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters in the high school Fab Lab to make your robots even cooler. This is a 1-week program.

Summer Music Program

For rising 3rd - 8th grade students. Two-week orchestra summer program. Classes include chamber music, improv, chorus, fiddle, technique, music theory, and orchestra rehearsals for woodwinds, brass, and string instruments. Students will perform in a concert on August 2 for families, who can arrive at 10:45 a.m. for the 11:00 a.m. concert. Breakfast and Lunch provided to students during this program. Beginners are welcome.

Summer Success 9th Grade Orientation

For rising 9th graders. The Summer Success 9th grade orientation course is a 2 week introduction (10 class meetings) to what it takes to be successful at Somerville High. Slideshow about the program content. Ninth Graders will explore the following topics:

  • The course and extracurricular opportunities available at SHS
  • The layout of the building
  • How the high school class schedule works
  • How the Communities (Beacon, Elm, Highland, Broadway) are structured at SHS
  • Tips to be a successful high school student, including but not limited to time management, self-advocacy, navigating online platforms used at SHS
Dates and Times: There are four different sessions of Summer Success so you can choose what works best for you this summer. Register for the course that best fits your schedule. Depending on enrollment, some options may close or students may be asked to switch sessions.

Option 2: July 8 - 19, 10:40 a.m. - 12:40 p.m.

Educators and administrators refer students into these programs based on academic need. There are no costs associated with these academic programs.

The Calculus Project

The Somerville Calculus Project (TCP) supports Black and Latinx students as they develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of mathematics. This summer, rising 7th through 12th grade students will come together for a 4 week, in-person program that includes advanced math instruction, community building activities, fun field trips, enrichment clubs, and more.

Elementary SPELL (Grades 1-6)

SPELL is a summer program for multilingual learners at the beginning stages of English. The SPELL program provides students with theme-based language learning experiences that develop students' reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Enrichment activities will be built in throughout the week. This program is by referral only by students' ESL teachers.

A summer program with project based learning and field trips. For currently enrolled Next Wave/Full Circle students.
Dates: August 5 - 16
Time: 8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Monday - Thursday) and 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (Fridays)

SHS Summer School

A summer program with credit recovery opportunities for current enrolled SHS students. Somerville High School Summer School believes that all students can be successful. We are committed to providing a supportive learning environment where we take into account each student's individual needs. Free breakfast and lunch is provided for all students.

Summer Explore

Summer Explore Kindergarten Transition Program supports academic readiness for kindergarten at the Capuano Early Childhood Center. Summer Explore offers experiences for children with little to no preschool experience or who would benefit from summer programming as they transition to kindergarten. Includes developmentally appropriate academic learning, playtime, art, and physical movement as well as FREE breakfast and lunch.
Attendance is required for the entire program. Registration is by invitation through teacher referral. Summer Explore has limited seats.

Summer Adventure Program

This program is for all rising K to 6th graders. Students will participate in exciting theme-based activities and, during full weeks, take two field trips. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served daily. Families may enroll their students in one or more of the five sessions.
Dates: July 8 – August 9, 2024
Time: 8:15 a.m. – 4:15 p.m.
Location: East Somerville Community School, Grades: Rising K – 2nd grade
Location: Healey School, Grades: Rising 3rd - 6th grade (plus L.I.T.)
Cost: $268 per week, with financial assistance available
Registration period: April 2 - April 5, 2024

 

Summer Adventure Program for Leaders in training

This program is for all rising 7th – 9th  graders. Students will support students as mentors and prepare to become summer adventure program counselors. This is a great opportunity for students who enjoy working with younger children and want to take on a leadership role. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are served daily.

Grades: Rising 7th, 8th, & 9th graders
Cost: $82.00 per week, with financial assistance available
