Visiting Our PreK - 8 Schools

Are you visiting our schools during Open House week? There is a lot to see and learn.

Here are a few ideas for how to make the most of your Open House tours.

Trust your instincts

You know your children better than anyone and you know how to find the best learning environment for your child. There are so many factors that make each family’s needs unique, and you’re the best judge of what school will work best for your child and your family. There are many great options in Somerville. You can’t go wrong.

See classrooms in action

Nothing will tell you more about a school than getting the chance to observe students and staff in the classroom. Spending time in a school will give you a “feel” for the school environment and culture.

Pace yourself

If your schedule permits, you may want to use more than one Open House day. Visiting schools can provide you with a lot of information to absorb and think about. Pick one school that wasn’t originally on your list and visit it. You might surprise yourself.

Talk to students

Some schools will have middle grades students help with tours. Ask what they like about their school and about their experiences.

Talk to teachers and staff

Take the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

Talk to parents

Don’t miss the chance to share thoughts with other parents and families. You may want to join an Enrollment Office (formerly Parent Information Center) coffee hour, open during Open House days from 9am -10am.

Take the time to review

Take some notes after a visit to jog your memory as you talk with other decision-makers and visit the school webpages.

We are looking forward to welcoming your child to the Somerville Public Schools. If you have any questions, please contact the Enrollment Office (formerly the Parent Information Center) or you may call schools directly before or after Open House week. Look for more resource information about choosing the right school at the Enrollment Office (formerly the Parent Information Center) website.
