Playgroups Went Virtual This Year
In a typical year, early childhood playgroups are a place for children and their families to play, read, and sing together, as well as being a place where families can build supportive community. Playgroups are offered through the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative (SFLC). The SFLC is the Family Engagement Department for Somerville Public Schools, which has played a crucial role reaching families throughout our community during this time period. Part of the community for more than 20 years, playgroups often serve as some families’ first experience with the Somerville Public Schools. This year, playgroups went virtual in order to continue supporting young children and their families During COVID-19.
If there’s one thing we all know, it's that this is not a typical year! Playgroups, like most things, may look a little different these days but we are still here to support Somerville’s youngest and their families. And we’re having fun while doing it! Starting in spring 2020, our energetic, adaptive facilitators began leading Facebook Live and Zoom playgroups, while our multilingual story readers created engaging, child-focused storytimes for our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/SFLCplaygroups). During the Fall 2020 session, which runs from October 13 to December 17, 2020, we are also offering a Parents Meet & Greet for parents to connect with one another, as well as the first of several Friday Family Fun Nights with a musical performance! Learn more about participating in our programming on the Somerville Playgroups and Parent Support Groups webpage.
We won’t stop playing, reading, and singing together, building community, and supporting Somerville children and families! We hope you’ll join us for our Fall programming.
