WELCOME BACK FAMILIES!
September 7, 2022
Meet the New Office of Enrollment Director Teresa Rodriguez
Many families’ introduction to Somerville Public Schools is their visit to the Enrollment Office to register their child for school. Our new Enrollment Office Director Teresa Rodriguez says, “Our job is to welcome people. We let them know that we are happy they are in Somerville.” Learn more about her approach in the most recent district blog post.
Have You Updated Your Child’s Information Yet?
Did you know that the Enrollment Office manages the Yearly Student Information Updates process? If you haven’t already, please update your child’s information. It takes approximately 15 minutes per student. The information supports student safety and helps us provide families with services. We appreciate you taking the time to complete this. Visit the Yearly Student Information Updates page to learn more.
Summer 2022 Programming: Bigger and Better!
Out of School Time Director Heather McCormack says, “We had more kids in our summer programs, more kids in full-day programming, and more community partners than ever before! And we got back to field trips, adventures, and fun!” Twenty-two programs served almost 1,500 kids. Most students attended for free. Our eight community partners offered full scholarships to 20% of participants, and with their help we extended the day for several programs: Soccer Without Borders and the Summer of Yes provided extended hours for the Summer Program for English Language Learners, and the Somerville Recreation Department provided activities for our elementary school students. Middle grades students had new options as well. This included Career and Technical Education programs like carpentry, design, and health, the Robotics program run by the SHS Robotics team, and Change the Tune Girls Group. Visit the Out of School Time webpage to learn more.
Free CharlieCards for Students in Grades 7-12
We’re handing out free CharlieCards to all students in grades 7-12 for the 2022-2023 school year! The cards are distributed through schools. Working with the City of Somerville and the MBTA, the program was expanded to include middle grades students. We hope that students use them to get to school, work, run errands, and also enjoy exploring the Boston area with friends. Learn more about the M7 program at SPS on our website. Read the press release on the MBTA website.
Middle Grades Athletics
Students in grades 6-8 are invited to join fall Baseball, Softball, and the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams. Teams will practice or compete four to five days per week. Learn about the registration process through the webpage. Contact Assistant Athletics Director Evora Indira with questions. Students must receive medical clearance to play; students who were unable to attend the first medical clearance event may attend a second date for medical clearance on Tuesday, September 13, 3-5 p.m., at Somerville High School.
